Suzanne K. Somerville, LCSWSuzanne Somerville has worked in the mental health field for over 15 years. She has worked in community mental health as well as in institutions. She has worked extensively with adults, adolescents and elderly clients and is very much looking forward to increasing her work into the realm of couples therapy. Her clients have had a wide variety of needs including anxiety, trauma, depression, mood disorders, psychosis, suicidal ideation and addictions.

Suzanne is the daughter of a career military officer. Having moved multiple times during her youth and adolescence gives her a unique perspective for people who are dealing with moves and transitions. Having lived overseas also gives her a richer understanding of multiple cultures. She has lived in this local area for the past 15 years.

She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Virginia. She earned her Masters Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Suzanne recognizes the importance of ongoing clinical training and has had post-graduate training in Illness Management and Recovery, Motivational Interviewing, Problem Gambling, Substance Abuse and many other areas that you can see on her CV linked to the website. She has completed training as an Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, both levels 1 and 2. She has also completed Level 1 of Gottman Couples’ Therapy and will continue to complete levels 2 and 3 in the spring of 2014.

As a therapist in a forensic setting, she has worked with a large number of people with dual diagnosis, impulse and anger management needs, and chronic mental illness. She uses a combination of skills and therapies to help people achieve goals and resolve issues. Her approach is very collaborative. Her intention is to help people be the best that they can be and sustain that level through reframing and building new skills. Suzanne looks forward to starting the next chapter of her career by adding private practice.
